How to Choose a Nursing Home: |

There are some basic questions to ask to find the best nursing home capable of meeting the needs of your loved one/resident:
• Professional Staff: How many registered nurses and licensed practical nurses are in the facility providing patient care? Is there an RN on duty 24 hours a day? How many LPN's are on duty each shift? How many patients does each nurse have to provide care for?
• Other Staff: What is the patient to nursing assistant ratio? How many times a week will the assistants provide a bath and/or shower to the patient? Who will provide assistance in walking the patient daily, if possible? Who will ensure that the patient will be fed and that they have assistance in feeding? Who will ensure that the patient is checked on when in bed? How often do they check on each patient?
• Medical Care: How often will the physician visit the patient/resident? Who is the Medical Director of the facility and when does he visit the nursing home? How can you speak directly to the physician taking care of your loved one when the doctor visits the nursing home? What if the patient wants to see a physician and his attending physician is unavailable?
• Costs: What services are not covered by medicaid or medicare? What differences exists for skilled care and intermediate care in the facility?
